Poke.

you know what day it is,
0419 - 0420,
And I'm counting the stars, cause I wanna know how far you are.
This holiday is so damn illegal.

Spring in new york,
A pink sunset tonight...
finally joined the club.

I've got that summertime, summertime sadness,
Build a man a fire, and he's warm for a night.
Set a man on fire, and he's warm forever.
that smolder look.

Caught with her hand in the Nutella jar,
Got tipsy after two flutes of champagne today.
I failed so hard I won.
That's why I'm here.

Night Moves by Stephanie Barber?

To me, It is interesting to see youtube comments out of place. On a book? That is a very different experience. I think to choose this piece music piece to work on is a good choice. It has some history, definitely came before youtube but it also has a good stream of supporters. You see emotion pour out on youtube about the past, about what people have been through. You see how music from the past is compared with music today. You see how this piece have its existence today, within games, pop culture. I remember hearing it in the TV show "how I met your mother" I would not have known this song as a foreigner in the states if not for the TV show. But you see the tracks it leaves through out history. Through the thirty plus years it existed. The impact it has on music, culture and people's life. It also captures the nature of us human beings. We like to compare, we debate who is the better musician and many of us, seem to like old things more than the new. You might also question, Hmmm, Who is the author here? Is it the one who made the song? Bob segar? or is it the one who uploaded the video? or is it "Jimmej955" who uploaded the video? Or is it Stephanie Barber who did the filtering? So manny people and things are involved in order for this work to exist.

Why? Do we remember?

Why? Do we remember?

What is at stake?
What is lost?

Remember?
remember the blood we shed.
remember the bloody stream of history bleed.
remember the price we paid.

Why are we here, again.
Why are we shedding blood again.
Why are we withstanding history again.
Why are we paying the price again.

Is this wrong?
The occupation.
We need it.
Do we?
Call for it,
We need it.

What box?
A black box.
A box of feed,
for the communist beast.

Trade, what trade?
No, there is no trade.
There is no give and take.
There is give, and only give.
Just give.
Give, give,give.
That is how you sell a nation.

Unity?
Unity of the people?
What people?
What are we?
Do we know?
What's we?

Give us transparency.
Give us tranquility.
Give us honesty.

This is a poetic response to what is going on in taiwan. It all started on March 17th 2014 when a trade act was passed within 30 seconds. Within the next 26 hours, students gathered. They occupied  the legislative Yuan as a form of protest. A response and act against the process how the act is passed, it was not transparent nor was it righteous. They are also worried of the impact that it would bring to Taiwan. Most importantly, the Trade act is signed between Taiwan and Communist China, we are two countries with great disagreements on Taiwan's identity. We have also seen what China have done to people that did not follow their wishes. How would we be able to know, we are safe?

“Tech-TOC:Complex Temporalities and Contemporary Technogenesis”

In this chapter, Hayles focused a lot on the book/Narrative program TOC. From the description it seem like a interesting read that plays with the concept of time. The way that one captures time and moving with the narrative itself. They seem to be in fragments but slowly pieces up the story. TOC, which also stands for technotex as Hayles put it, which contains the complicated relation with time that also consists the large themes of the story. In the presentation of the program itself it seem to be in fragments that goes back and forth within the narration. It seem as a interesting interaction between the program it self and the reader/User that is looking through it. The book itself seem very interesting with the capability to evoke different feelings and situations as one move along through it. The main topic of it is a struggle that we face every day. The concept of time and how it seem like it could only move in one direction. Even in math and physics, there seem to only have proven way to move forward in time but not back in time. I really enjoyed the quote below.

“humans construct time through measuring devices, but these measuring devices also construct humans through their regulation of temporal processes. The resulting human-technical hybridization in effect conflates spatialized time with temporal duration.”(116)

It is, that as we move day by day, we are aware of time in some sense. We lear n to live with it and grow with it. It integrates itself into our lives. Time is always has a unique play in life.

“virtuality a work that is more abstract than concretized and that consequently possesses a large reservoir of possibilities that may be actualized as the technological milieu progresses and as technical objects proliferate, exploring ways to achieve greater integration”(120)

Like the many works we discussed in class, most of them always seem like there is a lack in something. maybe the coding, maybe the way it is presented, maybe the way the art is executed. However, like what Hayles is saying here. I feel the same. They move us forward. move this art form forward. They may not reach the perfect realms of other form of art but it sure moved digital poetry into a new ground.

Technogenesis in Action: Telegraph Code Books and the Place of the Human

The chapter talks about code and its progression through history. Through this, one could observe how we crave technology to improve so that it could better serve our needs and purpose. It is interesting to see how the code system develops and call for more accuracy. It also shows how privileged it is to exits in a time of internet where messages and thought could be traveling so fast with out going through the trouble of encrypting, decoding coding and so forth. What I found most interesting is definitely Andrew Hallners' Scientific Dial. It is a big attempt and dream to call for the utopian code. A code where all could understand, but still it is private. that extends through all nations, language, and culture. Even thought the results of it was not successful but one could observe that early designers consideration of the user and try to come up with a solution that will cater to everyones needs.

"compels him to inscribe, within the code book itself, the cultural and ideological worldview that he evidently regards as the right and true path for human happiness." (169)

How big can one dream? To have created a system that will bring true human happiness. Today, we have google translation, code protected email accounts. These seem to have in some way reached what was dreamed. One have to respect and astonish by the gold that was set up by Andrew Hallners. The promotional ideas of his was also intriguing. Although it eventually fell short of what it intended. But the idea itslef is worth thinking upon.

Endemic Battle Collage by Geof Huth 1886~87

The work by Geof Huth is a play on words with the interaction that it creates with the screen. It has a hectic feeling to it. It does not have much sound but only a “beep”, “ticks” or noise that is commonly heard during everyday computer use of the early days. It is created in 1886 to 1887. This is a rather early time in the computer history but the work is still relatable today. The words very much relate to the image it created. For example, the running of the word rain does created the image or feel of rain as it scatter through the screen. What is special about this is that even though it is scattered along the screen one could still easily recognize the word that “rain”. Then as the word thread run vertically down the screen. the image of thread is created. The scatter of words on the screen then highlighted by selection is also a interesting experience where at first non recognition could be seen but through the highlights one could spot the words immediately. The whole work plays well with the eye and amazing at how so much could be read from it through a wrok created so early. It is just a black box within a computer screen, the creating pushes the boundaries to have a cohesive and powerful work within great constrains.

in the white darkness by Reiner Strasser on January 2004

In the white darkness by Reiner Strasser looks into the mind of Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease patience. It recreates the feeling one get when they are loosing memory. Through the over lay of sounds of images one could grasp the feel of memory loss. Some images slowly fade out, some are a fragment of a larger image, some vibrates as one sees it. It creates an experience, a lost of time and space. They are all stringed together with lines between dots. This very much resembles a mind map which helps one to organize their thought but interestingly enough, it is about the process of loosing memory. There is some form of irony with the way the work is presented. It feels like one is trying to piece their thoughts together but in veil as they are all so fragmented, scattered and unrecognizable. The word "Déjà vu " pops out when you click on one of the dots. The idea of remembering but not really accessing, recognizing but not really knowing. I believe the images and the way it is handled very much carries it meaning. I do kind of hope that more could have been done with the boarders of the image. They might not necessarily have to be an rectangle image but could be rounded, fragmented, or deformed. The rectangular pictures does seem a little constrained.
