Technogenesis in Action: Telegraph Code Books and the Place of the Human

The chapter talks about code and its progression through history. Through this, one could observe how we crave technology to improve so that it could better serve our needs and purpose. It is interesting to see how the code system develops and call for more accuracy. It also shows how privileged it is to exits in a time of internet where messages and thought could be traveling so fast with out going through the trouble of encrypting, decoding coding and so forth. What I found most interesting is definitely Andrew Hallners' Scientific Dial. It is a big attempt and dream to call for the utopian code. A code where all could understand, but still it is private. that extends through all nations, language, and culture. Even thought the results of it was not successful but one could observe that early designers consideration of the user and try to come up with a solution that will cater to everyones needs.

"compels him to inscribe, within the code book itself, the cultural and ideological worldview that he evidently regards as the right and true path for human happiness." (169)

How big can one dream? To have created a system that will bring true human happiness. Today, we have google translation, code protected email accounts. These seem to have in some way reached what was dreamed. One have to respect and astonish by the gold that was set up by Andrew Hallners. The promotional ideas of his was also intriguing. Although it eventually fell short of what it intended. But the idea itslef is worth thinking upon.
